No take the win you have to win 'ball possession' first, the more you have this the more the possibility to attain your winning goals grow. If we analyze the rebound statistics of a team and compare them with game lose/win results, its proven that a team with not good rebound record will win but with greater difficulty.
When a coach is on the stage of building a team he takes care to first have a strong defense normally AND also, to 'keep the ball'' among his players. Rebound is crucial. But when all that is secured then the team suddenly gets more shoots and eventually better scoring record (which leads sometimes to win).
Now, finding and obtaining players whose specialty would be exactly that, rebound, is a difficult task for the coach/manager. The player should be as tall as possible and jump agility, and possibly it helps if he can be a genius. I mean the 'center' position is so crucial ,exactly because of the rebound, which itself leads to the ball possession which as i said earlier, leads to more scoring opportunity. The center should then basically be as tall as possible, and as smart as possible...
Imagine Saquil O'Neal if he was only a dumb rebounder? I dont think we would like him so much if he just did that as many other centers do (in Europe maybe more, where you get very tall monstrous young guys who dont know basketball much).
I think good centers are always just a few, globally. For me, a classical example of a rebounder who is a 'master' is Arvidas Sabonis who scored 42 against Greece (i was there) while he was master of rebounds in that game. This center-scorer is not the dream of a coach who will try to assign specific system play to his players individually, but i guess, its another issue of a coach's 'philosophy' of the game.
