The ”problem” for the Jets in this game is that they will be without the quarterback who has to a certain extent ignited their offence in Mike White who misses the game due to a rib injury sustained in the game against the Bills last week. This means that Zach Wilson gets another turn at the controls of the offence and that’s hardly a statement that sets the pulse racing as Wilson has struggled before when starting.
Before last week, they held quarterbacks to the following statistic output: 57. 4% completion rate, 1, 223 passing yards, seven touchdowns, seven interceptions, and a 74. 9 passer rating. On past performances Wilson will not scare them one iota. Therefore, the question for the Jets will be can you move the ball on the ground? That’s going to be difficult against a run defence that has shut down quality running backs like Saquon Barkley, Travis Etienne and Dalvin Cook in three of the last four weeks.
Well, the breaking news is that it is and one that still has playoff implications for both teams although the post season if either qualify may come a year too soon for either of them. There’s no doubt that both franchises have exceeded expectations this season and the Lions are entering this game on the back of two straight double-digit wins having posted 40 points on the Jaguars and 34 on the Vikings. It should be pointed out though that both of those victories came at home in a domed environment and conditions will be vastly different at the Meadowlands on Sunday.

The chances of Wilson taking advantage of a Lions defence that has struggled on occasions are far less than if White was playing. Wilson has struggled with the passing game both in terms of completing his passes and accuracy and his presence at quarterback downgrades the effectiveness of the Jets pass catchers such as Garrett Wilson who has been having an impressive first season and Elijah Moore who has never established any rapport with Wilson. Since the Lions fired Aubrey Pleasant after the team’s loss to Miami, the Lions improved monumentally in pass defence.

Brown the Jets will pose a tough test. All in all, the Jets have allowed the NFL’s lowest completion rate (58%), fifth-fewest yards per pass attempt (6. 6), and fifth-fewest passing TDs (13). The Lions may have to like the Jets rely on their run game which has become a three-man committee between Jamaal Williams, D’Andre Swift, and Justin Jackson who shared the snaps against the Vikings on a 26-25-20 count. The Jets front seven has plenty of talent to keep that trio quiet although things would be slightly easier for the Lions if Jets DT Quinnen Williams is missing with a calf injury. The strength of both sides looks to be on the defensive side of the ball and given the question marks that I’ve thrown up on both quarterbacks points and actually moving the ball could be at a premium.
The Jets for their part have had a rather up-and-down season but look to have an exciting team for the future although after getting themselves to a 5-2 position in Week 7 it’s been tougher going since then. Losing four out of their last six games has seen them fall to 7-6 on the season and leave them with a diminishing chance of making the post season. They have though been involved in some tough and close games with their defence looking a tough one to score on. Only the Vikings (27 points) putting an appreciable amount of points on them during that recent six-game spell. In that period, they have held the explosive Buffalo offence to 17 and 20 points whilst splitting the series with the division leaders.
The responsibility for moving the ball on the ground for the Jets will fall to Zonovan Knight and Michael Carter who out-snapped Knight last week 37 to 35. It’s a tough ask but if the Jets aren’t willing to let Wilson throw then it will have to be a grinding run game on offence for the Jets. Flipping things over though the Lions won’t find life so easy on the road against a tough Jets defence in less than hospitable weather conditions. Whilst the Jets have a weakness at quarterback the same could be said of the Lions Jared Goff when he hits the road. Goff this year at home is averaging 277.
It should also be pointed out that the Lions are a very different team on the road and trusting them to beat a home team with a winning record takes a leap of faith. If Mike White were in at QB for the Jets I’d be happy to back them but with Wilson in at the position I see this as a very even game which will be decided by the defences and could well turn into a low scoring tussle that hinges on who can actually play some consistent offence.
