I took a look in Sasha Vujacic's (Lakers) statistics to try enter the thinking of Lakers manager and i saw many important issues. His initial thought was probably 'age factor' and the comparison between, play time in the game and time to play that was given by the coach. So he really saw 'age-play time given by coach-player performance statistics'. These and the players playing position dynamics inside the team, are the 'tools' to decide if he should stay or not. In Sasha's example we have a player 24 year old with continuesly evolving positive performance statistics (especialy shoots) and as i said, player high performance in the given playtime going up with time, is saying to the manager that he is going to go only better in his career, so why leave him to another time to harness his talent and maturity in the game? Another attribute is of course players personality and maybe psychological issue of 'character' and how much he is a team player or a solo showman. Sasha's role in a team full of big stars like Kobe Bryant, Gasol, Odom and Arita is for sure not the First role but the laker's manager -rightly thinking!- decided that in this new season Sasha will probably get more play time by his coach as it happens slowly since Lakers had this player, and he will even improve as said before so that, he will really establish himself as an important factor in one of Nba's biggest teams. For a team to be 'excellent' its not only about having big stars to do most work but have valued substitutes to carry on in times of need without jeopardizing the teams' success. So a player like Sasha Vujacic, physically ok, with continualy improving stats of performance, seemingly wants to succeed in his job 'undertake' ,devoted that is, YOUNG, and perhaps not very demanding in salary issues, isnt that what a coach (and a manager) of every team want?!
