By reading this week’s texts for Introduction to Scouting, I realised scouting is far more complex that just being able to tell which player is good in general. That isn’t enough, as we have to prove to the couch and all people interested ‘’why’’ this player is good or bad. It is a talent of combining data to get practical results on the basketball arena, since it brings together knowledge from all kinds of sources: statistics, rumours about the player personal life, rumors from newsources like hoopshype.com and what the players couch and teamates think about him.
Then, as I was reading various articles, I noted how a player can ruin his chances of being drafted and rated high when he talks in a certain way , like the case of Goran Dragic, who seems to have a strong opinion where he wants to play next and why, while it is obvious that on his backround (his many managers in Usa and Europe) seem to disagree with each other and with the player himself. And all this ‘rumour’ end ups opening new rumors for other players to substitute the ‘star’ player under consideration (even mentioning publicly names, in this case Jannero Pargo.) So we should take under consideration even the public behaviour (and home behaviour, like Jason Kid’s divorce due to wife’s abuse) to create a final report for a particular player.
As a scout I used to look only for talent, but I see now how statistics will make a difference. Of course in small ages statistics aren’t available, so I will have to make sure I get down notes on each kid’s talents and also, something i didn't realise so much before, his character role inside the team.
Reading Ed Gregory’s article report, on how he doesn’t write down a lot of info for a player but just some descriptive words (although he makes sure he watches a lot of low level games of that player) and he then seems to make a final decision quickly, I remember an article about how the current Usa couch team lead by Mike Krzyzewski and assistants Jim Boeheim, Mike D'Antoni and Nate McMillan watched the Greece-Germany game from the end zone seats, deciding after three quarters they had seen enough. But i guess this is a talent to be learned, how to able to ''see'' a game (or player) and make some first estimations in a short time of observing them.

That's very true Zenon, it's a lot more to scouting than just looking at the talent. I'm starting to be convinced that its a 50/50 split between talent and attitude. I'm a coach and I have witnessed good players talent wise but had rough attitudes. And I'll admit, I would rather coach a player with a good attitude and average talent than a player with a bad attitude and great talent. As the overall talent of players start to increase, coaches are going to look more to the attitudes of the individuals to distinguish between certain players in regards to scouting.
Good Post.

I agree with you 100%. Its tough to change bad habits. Every GM and Coach wants that player that can lead his team through the trenches. You will find a lot of times talentwise the leader of a team may not always be the most talented. You can teach the fundamentals of basketball, but its hard to change someone beliefs and morals.

You took the words right out of my mouth. With me I have a sense to go with when I scout or view a player but to know guys that have been in this for years is crazy on how little they'll see of you and know right off the bat if your good or not.
